The purpose of the Rethink Dry Cleaning campaign is to inform Canadians about the health and environmental risks associated with conventional dry cleaning. Key to this end is the understanding that dry cleaning is neither dry nor clean, and instead uses toxic liquid solvents comprised of ingredients like PERC, a known carcinogen linked to liver and kidney cancers.
Luckily, a safe and effective alternative exists which is professional wet cleaning, and Environmental Defence is working to engage the fashion industry in Toronto and nation-wide to change the garment care conversation and support a method that is safe for workers, clients and the surrounding environment.
